Whistler Blackcomb Closed For The Season Due to COVID Spike

Updated:

October 13, 2024

UPDATE3/30/2021 4:43pm:Whistler Blackcomb is officiallyclosedfor the 2020-21 winter season.

Whistler Blackcomb hasannouncedthat the province of British Columbia has mandated it to close starting at midnight tonight. This order comes as COVID spikes have occurred in the Whistler area, with visitors traveling to and from the region. Resort operations are not expected to resume untilApril 19.

Our Take

Despite vaccinations rapidly occurring around North America, this spike manifests that we’re not out of the woods yet. Thankfully, this closure is well past Whistler’s peak season, so we imagine most Canadians who wanted to visit this season got their runs in (Americans weren’t allowed to travel to Canada due to COVID). However, this announcement must be a huge disappointment for locals, especially those who work at the resort and may be out of pay for several weeks.

It remains to be seen whether Blackcomb reopens on April 19—the area currently has a planned closure date of May 24, 2021. This is likely the end of the road for the Whistler side, which prior to this news had a planned closure date of April 18, 2021.

It remains to be seen whether other B.C. resorts receive similar closure orders. As far as we know, today’s announcement is a Whistler-specific mandate.
