Squaw Valley Confirms Name Change in the Works
Updated:
October 13, 2024
According to astatementput out by the resort, Squaw Valley is getting a name change. The resort says they have put a lot of thought into the derogatory nature of the name “Squaw”, and have decided to remove the word from their name. The resort says they’ll finalize a new name at a later date, and that it will be implemented for the 2021-22 season.
Such a change would follow in the footsteps of the resort’s town, which rebranded as Olympic Valley in 1960.
Our Take
We respect the owners for maintaining an open mind on this topic, and the name change, whatever it may be, could affect consumer sentiments about Squaw Valley. However, it won’t change the resort’s overall mountain experience. We expect the area to maintainits competitive edgeover otherLake Tahoe destinationsregardless of what it’s called.
