Ikon Adds 21/22 Pass Credits in the Event of COVID-19 Closures This Season

Updated:

October 13, 2024

This morning, Ikon released an expanded Assurance Policyon their website. If Ikon Pass destinations close due to COVID-19 between December 10, 2020 and April 11, 2021, passholders will receive a “proportional credit” towards the purchase of a 21/22 Ikon Pass product.

Passholders can choose between two destination elections: All Destinations or One Eligible Destination. Those who choose the All Destinations option will get a proportional credit based on theaveragepercentage of days closed among all North American non-heli destinations during the above time period. Those who choose the One Eligible Destination option will get a proportional credit based on thetotalpercentage of days closed at the selected resort during the above time period. Ikon provided some scenarioshereto help explain.

If you don’t use your pass at all, the new policy now covers proactive deferrals with no questions asked until April 11, 2021.

Our Take

This update provides a much needed upgrade to Ikon’s insurance policy in the wake of continued COVID-19 impacts. Until now, Ikon’s Adventure Assurance only allowed for deferrals between September 10 and December 10 and had no mid-season closure coverage—this was a serious disadvantage compared to Epic.

Ikon’s new closure policies aren’t quite the same asEpic’s Coverage, which provides full refunds rather than deferrals in the event of closures. Both passes have an “all destination” and “specific resort” option, but coverage is slightly different between the two.

Neither coverage provides direct clarity on what might happen in the event of limited resort operations. However, Ikon’s extended deferment policy will effectively allow anyone affected by this issue to push their pass to the following season.

It should be interesting to see how Epic, which currently has no proactive deferment or refund policies, responds to this.
