Breckenridge Names New Peak 7 Chairlift Freedom SuperChair, Begins Construction
Updated:
October 13, 2024
Earlier this week, Breckenridgeannouncedthe start to construction on its long-anticipated Peak 7 infill lift. The resort has also revealed the name for the new high-speed quad: the Freedom SuperChair. This project is set to bring relief to the Independence SuperChair six-pack, which currently provides the only lift access to lower-mountain Peak 7 terrain. Breckenridge says the new lift is set to debut as soon as Peak 7 terrain opens for the 2021-22 season.
This expansion was originally set to open for the 2020-21 season, but it wasdelayeddue to the impacts of COVID-19.

Our Take
In ourBreckenridge assessment,we noted that Colorado resort has done a so-so job of handling crowds across the resort, with inconvenient chokepoints at some popular areas. Peak 7 has been the worst offender for quite some time, with the popular intermediate area consistently seeing appallingly long lines, especially during peak times. The problem has gotten worse since the Peak 6 expansion opened in 2013, when guests started using the Independence lift as a means of traversing to that area in addition to lapping Peak 7 terrain.
While it won’t open any new terrain—and it doesn’t look to offer quite the same convenience and capacity as the Independence chair—we hope the Freedom SuperChair upgrade provides considerable crowding relief to this popular area.
